The Silk Scarf by Ahmed Essop

SETTING
The setting of this story took place at the Oriental Plaza in Johannesburg at a shopping centre owned by Indian people.

THE PLOT
The story began when Mrs Nebo with her friend Margaret and the escorts went for shopping.Once they were walking along the shops, Mrs Nebo saw a beautiful dress and and she bought it but she did not find a matching scarf for it.They then walked  past many shops looking for the scarf until when they come into this shop owned by Mr Sakur.When Mrs Nebo asked for the scarf that will match her dress, the shopkeeper showed her one perfect scarf that match her dress.It was a silk scarf which was flashy and brightly coloured.After Mr Sakur told her the price,she checked into her bag to get the money for the scarf but she was fifteen rand short.She told the shopkeeper that she will pay with a cheque but Mr Sakur disagreed since the rule of his shop said `No cheque`.Mrs Nebo felt offended and humiliated.Her friend Margaret tried to convince the shopkeeper to accept the cheque by telling him how rich Mrs Nebo was but Mr Sakur kept his words.Margaret then continued telling the shopkeeper that Mrs Nebo is the wife of an important politician butr it did not change Mr Sakur words.They stayed disputing until the escort of Mrs Nebo come in to see what was happening but she sent them back.Mrs Nebo said she will not leave the shop without the scarf,so they argued until when the other shopkeepers come to see what was happening.When this shopkeepers heard  who Mrs Nebo was,they convinced their friend Mr Sakur to accept the cheque but he disagreed.At the end the shopkeepers decided to buy the scarf as a gift to Mrs Nebo.After she got the scarf she thanked the shopkeepers but looked at Mr Sakur and said that the will be no place for people like him in the democratic South Africa.

MAIN CHARACTERS
The rich woman
The rich woman was Mrs Nebo.She was of medium height,with heavy loins,her smooth-skinned complexion having been pampered by beauticians in Sandton salons.She was a type of woman who feels easily offended and humiliated especial that she got a lot of money and a poor shopkeeper does not want to accept he cheque.She was a woman of her words because when she said she will not leave without the scarf she really did not.She likes taking revenge thats why she did not forgive the shopkeeper for not giving her the silk scarf.
The shopkeeper
The shopkeeper was Mr Sakur.He wa a short gaunt looking man who still wore the antique braces.He was a man who run his business according to his rules.He wa a fair man who does not treat customers according to their wealthy.He wa a man of his words.

The main character is Jerry an English boy. He was 11 years old  when the story took place.  He likes swimming and going to the  beach. He likes leaving the house without his mother's premission. He was jelous with the older boys.

The plot
The story begin when Jerry the main character and his mother  who was a widow went to the beach during one holiday.The went to the beach to  have fun together and sunbathing as  well.Jerry likes swimming and he feel excited to go swimming.The first day at the beach,Jerrry overswarm,he looked exhausted,weak and dizzy.The next day his mother confirm that the next morning  they skould go together but Jerry refused,but because his mother insisted he later agreed.At the beach he excirsed his lungs as if every part of his body depend on them.That night he was bleeding through the nose.In another  four days his mother talked about going home.Two days before they leave the beach,Jerry went to swim without his mother knowing it.Things turn around  when he wanted to dig a hole for himself.His nose started bleeding again  while he was under water.When he went back home he was hidding and never wanted his mother to notice wkat happened but it did not work out because her mother find out.
